A Message from the Heart: Why We Go Red for Women
Heart disease is often seen as a men's issue, but the truth is shocking: it is the No. 1 killer of women, claiming the life of one in three women each year. That's approximately one woman every minute. This silent threat doesn't discriminate, affecting women of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities differently. The warning signs are not the same as those in men, and the facts only begin to scratch the surface of this critical health crisis.
That's why the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement is so vital. It advocates for more research, better education, and swifter action to protect the mothers, sisters, and daughters we love.
The Blossom Blue Team recently spent a fun and powerful afternoon "going red" in a show of solidarity and support for women everywhere. We believe in the mission to bring this critical awareness to the forefront.
The Facts We Need to Know
Heart disease and stroke cause one in three deaths among women each year. But the statistics tell a deeper story:
-
Women between the ages of 25 and 34 have the lowest awareness rate of any age group, at just 44 percent.
-
On average, Hispanic women are likely to develop heart disease a full decade earlier than non-Hispanics.
-
Cardiovascular diseases kill nearly 50,000 African-American women annually.
-
The impact even extends to children, with about 36,000 born with a heart defect each year in the United States.
These facts are a call to action. Take charge of your health by knowing your family history and understanding your personal risk factors.
